For you and your family

We know how hard it is to live with addiction

You are not alone. Your family is not alone.

Maybe you’ve tried to quit on your own more than once, or tried to help your loved one in every way you could think of: talking, setting boundaries, waiting for them to change. It’s normal to feel exhausted, afraid or guilty. Addiction is a disease, not a matter of attitude or willpower, and it can be treated.

5 questions every family should ask

Before you choose where your loved one will recover, ask these questions at any treatment center, including ours.

Key questionWhy it mattersAt Lumenia
Is it registered with the health authorities and compliant with NOM-028?It ensures qualified staff, appropriate facilities and respect for human rights.Operating License (Aviso de Funcionamiento) filed with COFEPRIS and endorsed by CONASAMA.
Who will care for my loved one? Are there physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists?Withdrawal, anxiety and depression require clinical care, not just supervision.A multidisciplinary medical, psychiatric and psychological team, plus certified addiction counselors.
Is treatment tailored to the person and based on evidence?Every case is different: a one-size-fits-all program raises the risk of relapse.A personalized plan built after an assessment and adjusted along the way. Programs of 3 to 7 months based on the Minnesota Model.
How is the family involved, and when can we be in contact?Family is key. Be wary of any place that cuts off contact without a clinical reason.A specialized codependency program, scheduled visits and ongoing support for the family.
What happens after treatment ends? The first months back home carry the highest risk; without follow-up, progress is at stake. An outpatient program, in person or online, for follow-up care and relapse prevention.

Why these five? They bring together the criteria that come up most often in official guidelines. In Mexico, NOM-028 (the country’s official standard for addiction treatment) stresses registration with health authorities, a professional team and respect for human rights, including not isolating a person from their family without clinical justification. In the U.S., SAMHSA calls for evidence-based practices, family involvement and ongoing support, and NIDA adds that treatment should be tailored to each person and last long enough to work.
